Origin
Buddhism is one of the oldest religions in the world. It dates back to 563 BC. Gautama Buddha is the founder of Buddhism and attained enlightenment while sitting under a Bodhi tree in a place called Bodhgaya. He came to be known as Buddha, the enlightened one, and he preached his first sermon in a place called Sarnath.


Founder
The founder of Buddhism is also Gautama Buddha. He died at the age of 80 in Kushinagar near Gorakhpur.


Major Historical Figures
Guru Rinpoche who subdued Tibet’s evil spirit’s. Tsongkhapa the founder of Gelugpa. Fifth Dalai Lama who unified Tibet. King Songtsen Gampo who unified Tibet and introduced Buddhism to the country. Milarepa who attained supreme enlightenment of Buddha hood.


Major Sacred Writings
Buddhism writings include Four Noble Truths. Which consist of Unsatisfactoriness and Suffering, Desire and Attachment, There is an end to Unsatisfactoriness and Suffering, The end can be attained by journeying on the Noble Eighth Fold Path.


Key Beliefs
The Buddha considered knowledge important only insofar as it remains practical. He rejected speculation about such matters as God, the nature of the universe, and the afterlife, urging his followers to focus instead on the Four Noble Truths by which they can free themselves from suffering.


Distinctive Practices
The practice of meditation is central to nearly all forms of Buddhism, and it derives directly from the Buddha’s experiences and teachings. Meditation is the central focus of Zen Buddhism and the only way to liberation in Theravada Buddhism.


Major Celebration
Vesak or Buddha Day, which celebrates the birth and enlightenment of the one and only Buddha.
