Origin
The origin of Islam lies with Muhammad. Muhammad says that he saw the angel Gabriel, and was given the Qur’an, which is the way of Islamic life. This occurred around about 610 AD. Islam means ’submission to Allah’.


Founder
The founder of Islam is Muhammad. He was sent a message from Allah. Allah means God. Allah gave Muhammad the Qur’an through the angel Gabriel, who past it onto Muhammad.


Major Historical Figures
The major historical figures are Muhammad and Allah. Muhammad being the carrier of gods messages by bringing the Qur’an into Islamic history. Allah being their one and only God.


Major Sacred Writings
The Islamic sacred writing is the Qur’an. It is very much like the Christians Bible as it too tells stories and events that happened long ago. The Qur’an is a way Islamic life, it is what this religion is based on.


Key Beliefs
Muslims key belief is in the Five Pillars. Shahadah the declaration of faith, Salaah meaning prayer, Zakat meaning charity, Saum meaning fasting, and Hajj meaning pilgrimage.


Distinctive Practices
One of Islam’s greatest practice is Ramadan. Ramadan is where Muslims cannot eat while the sun is up. So they cannot eat from sun rise to sun set, but once the sun goes down they are free to eat what they want and as much as they want. This practice is for them to realise what it is like to be hungry. Islamic tradition also states that Muslims must pray five times a day.


Major Celebrations
In Islam, celebration is a form of thanking Allah, their God. Basically, celebration in Islam is going to parties, visiting and meeting friends, and generally having a good time with others.
